Blessing Snack Mix

I made this for the little munchkins to munch on while we complete most of Wolf Achievement 7 (Your Living World) at this week's den meeting.

The recipe is in the 2009-2010 PowWow book pg. 207.

Blessing Mix

Bugles brand corn snacks
-shaped as a cornucopia, a horn of plenty.

pretzel knots
-represent arms folded in thanks and prayer

candy corn
-during the first winter the pilgrims only had a few kernels of corn to eat each day because food was so scarce.

dried fruit (I used Craisins)
-Thanksgiving is the celebration of the harvest

sunflower seeds
-seeds represent the potential of a bounteous harvest for the next season if they are planted and well tended.

I also added a few fallish M&M's. Who's not thankful for chocolate? I know I am!

Ice Cream in a Bag

This ice cream is yummy, fun, and only takes 5 minutes to make!

Ice Cream in a Bag
Ingredients:
1 T sugar
1/2 C milk of half and half (I used whole milk)
1/4 t. vanilla
1/2 C rock salt (I used extra course water softener salt)

Pour milk, sugar, and vanilla into a pint freezer bag (Ziploc makes them)
Fill a gallon freezer bag half full of ice and sprinkle the rock salt over it. Put the pint bag inside the gallon one and shake for about five minutes until the milk hardens into ice cream(wear snow gloves so your hands don't freeze).

Remove the pint bag from the gallon one and eat it right from the bag (with a spoon of course).

Science Belt Loop

We will be working on the Science Belt Loop this month.
Requirements:

#1 Explain The Scientific Method to your adult partner (We will be learning about this in den meeting and your son will then need to explain it to you.)

#2 Use the scientific method in a simple science project. Explain the results to an adult.
(We will do several experiments in den meeting).

#3 Visit a museum, laboratory, observatory, zoo, aquarium, or other facility that employs scientists. Talk to a scientist about his or her work.
(You will need to do this on your own)
The Bean Museum
and Planetarium
at BYU are great places to visit.

Please let Jen or I know as soon as all requirements are completed.

February: "Power Up!"

We will be doing a few simple science projects at den meeting to learn about static electricity using balloons and tissue paper.

Check out these links for more fun experiments to do at home.

100 Years of Scouting

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the official Boy Scouts of America program.

There is a special program called "A Year of Celebration" that started in Sept. and goes through Dec.2010.

For information visit the link below and then click on the link to the requirements (there are different requirements for Cubs, Boy Scouts, leaders, and alumni).

Click here: A Year of Celebration

This is not something we will be working on specifically as a den as it is entirely optional so it will be up to your son (and you) to put forth the initiative to earn the award(s).

We will fulfill some of the requirements (inadvertently) as part of our regular den meetings and I will post a list after we do activities that meet the requirements for this award so you can keep track.

Please have your son get prior permission from either Sister Brower or Sister Pollock regarding requirements that involve helping in den meeting or Pack Night.

Happy New Year!
